Hey hey! I’m back after a brief hiatus. I was working on my next book (which should be coming out shortly - fingers crossed). 🤞🏼 I’ll also be publishing one of Sean’s books to Amazon and Audible soon. Stay tuned! 📖
New Year, New You?
Or not so much?
According to research done at Columbia University, approximately 50% of Americans make New Year's resolutions, but only about 25% of people actually stay committed to their resolutions after just 30 days. I’m guessing that the majority drop off within the first week.
We’re 26 days in. So, how you doin’?
I don’t know about you, but 2024 was not my favorite year, and so far, 2025 hasn’t been much better.
Last year was filled with challenges — from personal relationships to health to money. There were issues with all of it.
When I sat down around the New Year to do a journaling exercise, I couldn’t answer the question, “What have you achieved in the past year?”
By that, I mean I literally sat there thinking of everything that did NOT go well in 2024 and couldn’t think of anything good.
I had to remind myself (out loud), “You know that’s not true.”
I sat there and struggled to come up with a few things, but I forced myself to do it.
Here are a few highlights:
I read 89 books. 📚 That was fun! I’ll go over the best of them in an upcoming letter.
Two people I coached on their books have submitted proposals or manuscripts to editors or publishers. That’s an incredible accomplishment, and I’m so proud to have been a part of their process.
I did not lose all my money trading. (This is actually a win given everything else that was going on.) 🤦🏻♀️
While I had to work to come up with anything positive, it reminded me how easily we focus on the negative.
If you’ve been hanging around me for any length of time, you know that’s how our brains are built — to focus on what’s wrong or bad. It’s a safety mechanism from way back in human history.
But since we don’t have the same dangers facing us today as we did back then, a lot of those thoughts just end up causing us misery.
I have a Post-It on my computer that says, “Create the reality you want.”
It’s there to remind me—even though I’ve been teaching and living this stuff going on two decades now—that our thoughts create our reality.
So if I continue to focus on all the 💩 from 2024, that is exactly what I will get MORE of in 2025.
As we say in personal development, “What you focus on expands.” And there’s a whole lot of neuroscience that details how that happens, but my point here is…
It’s hard work. You really must force yourself to go beyond the knee-jerk negatives and seek out the positive.
If your New Year hasn’t started out as you’d hoped, don’t worry…
You have another chance at a New Year this week.
Wednesday (Jan 29) will be Day 1 of the Lunar New Year — which, to my mind, makes a whole lot more sense than going with January 1st just because Pope Gregory decided that’s when the year should start back in 1582.
There’s a quote attributed to author Paulo Coelho:
"One day or day one, you decide."
So, happy new year. Again. Let’s make the most of it. ✨
